prisoners in Maafushi jail transferred to Feydhoofinolhu, 9
to Himmafushi Rehab
Forty-eight prisoners in Maafushi Jail have been transferred
to Feydhoofinolhu and a further nine have been moved to the
Rehab in Himmafushi on Thursday. A source at the Maafushi
Jail said that the 57 prisoners had been transferred
Thursday afternoon and that only female prisoners had been
transferred to the Drug Rehabilitation Centre. The source
also said that officials from the National Narcotics Control
Bureau (NNCB) were involved in moving the prisoners to
Feydhoofinolhu also. However the security detail at
Feydhoofinolhu is being undertaken by DPRS officials.
Following the hunger strike staged by prisoners in the
Maafushi Jail a week back the Home Ministry had decided to
move as many prisoners to other locations. In that regard,
some are transferred to the Drug Rehabilitation Centre,
Feydhoofinolhu and the Government is also looking into the
possibilities of sending some of them abroad. 114 of the
prisoners were also released from prison and given over to
family custody.
M.N.D.F
has stopped providing security to the Former President: DRP
Secretary General says
that former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom is not being
given protection by MNDF. Abdulla Mausoom said that there is
these days Guards does not stand near the alivaage’ where
the former president used to stay. Mausoom also said that he
also does not understand the reason behind that and DRP is
now negotiating with concerned authorities. It is thought
that the reason behind this is that Former president Maumoon
is not in male’. Responding to this, Major Ibrahim Afzal of
MNDF said that they have not stopped providing security to
the Former president Maumoon and it will continue until any
words from the president Nasheed. He said that government
has not asked them to stop the security. Political analyzers
says that it’s not permissible to president Nasheed to
provide security to Maumoon without any law bill passed in
the parliament.

Democracy
Comes to Asia's Smallest Nation
With a population of
300,000, the tiny island nation of the Maldives comprises a
group of 26 atolls in the India Ocean. In the Indian Ocean,
far from India's southernmost tip, lies a chain of tiny
islets and atolls that comprise Asia's smallest nation, and
the smallest Islamic country in the world - the Republic of
Maldives. In October, the world's attention was drawn to the
Maldives when a former political prisoner became the
nation's first democratically-elected president. The event
was not only a proud moment for the people of the Maldives;
it served as another sign of the flowering of democracy in
South Asia.
