Maduvvaree citizens getting ready for a strike


People of Maduvvaree say that they will go for a strike if the government does not take any action against the soil erosion in Maduvvaree. They said that they have already sent a petition and they have been waiting for an answer. They also said that they will not keep quite if government keeps ignoring them.

Maduvvaree office informs that the petition signed by 419 people of Maduvvaree was sent through Atoll office to the concerned authorities. A leader of the Group told that they have informed to the Island Office about the matter.

He said that the petition is all about the ignorance of the government and the destructions to the island due to soil erosion to the island. He said that people of Maduvvaree are terrified of the erosion and demand a quick action to that issue.

Inhabitants of Maduvvaree say that government has sent Equipments, but work has not been yet started. MTCC said that they were not told the place to take soil. They also said that they does not have permission to do things on their own and will not start their work without the governments order.

Island Chief of Maduvvaree says that he has informed islanders about the progress and he is worried about the planned strike. He also said that the vice president have called him and said that they are doing all they can to solve the problem. “There is no reason for islanders to go for a strike.” Said the Island Chief, Abdulla Hameed. According to the Island chief, Soil erosion began when government made a harbor in Maduvvaree. He said that 3 houses have been fallen and there are more 5 houses expected to be fallen in a short time. “We don’t have any guarantee with those houses.” Chief said.

People from many islands are blaming the government for ignoring the basic needs of the people. Main projects for developments in Addu also have been stopped by government.
